Dawson County High School Head Softball Coach Jimmy Pruett’s team traveled to Anderson, S.C. to participate in the Higher Ground Softball Camp last week.

Thirteen players went to camp this year from the high school. The players went through fundamentals stations each morning before playing two games each afternoon.

“This is the first time we have been to Anderson,” Pruett said. “We haven’t been to Higher Ground in the last two years. It’s a great camp with great instruction from college players and coaches.”

Nineteen different schools attended this year’s camp. The skill levels ranged from middle school to varsity competition.

The Lady Tigers played several schools from South Carolina, such as: Belton-Honea Path, Palmetto and Pendleton. Dawson also was matched up with Georgia schools like Wesleyan, Elbert County and Jefferson.

“I thought we played very well. We were a little disappointed that we played in the second division, but that’s where the camp director placed us. I was very pleased with how we fielded the ball on defense and how we hit the ball on offense,” Pruett said.

“Cheyenne Bennett and Martie Rogers also pitched well for us,” he added.

Pruitt also said that it was encouraging to get senior second baseman Katie Pully back into the lineup. She had been out for several weeks with a knee injury.

Her first day back in action was on Tuesday at camp.

“It looked like Katie hasn’t missed a step. She really played well for us,” Pruett said.

The Lady Tigers will hold tryouts on Monday, August 2 before beginning regular season practice the next day.

Dawson will open the season with a scrimmage at home against North Forsyth High School on Aug. 11. The regular season will begin for the Lady Tigers at the Lanier Point tournament in Gainesville on Aug. 13-14.
